Hey! We had 2 great shows since last posting:

The One About How to Get Published with Senior Editor at Kensington Books in NYC and published author Gary Goldstein, who gave us the inside scoop on getting your novel, novella, short story, piece de resistance, etc.

The One About Immigration and Outsourcing (soon to be added to our Archives) with guest Dr. Joelle Saad-Lessler, Economics Professor at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University who discussed with us her take on the issue of immigration and outsourcing and their effect on the economy and job market. (This show kind of turned into our very special Halloween edition of SYWAJ)

So, You Wanna Relocate...

We finally have the audio up from the last two shows: The One About Millennial Expectations and The One About Online Networking.

Those of you who expected to hear about what to expect on the first month of your job were probably disappointed. This season of SYWAJ has been stricken with scheduling gaffs. What you heard, and what will be in the archives shortly, will be The One About Relocating when we spoke to Long Island Association Director of Communications, Gary Wotjas (pronounced ‘Wo-taz) who described the current situation influencing an exodus off of Long Island and what the LIA is doing to reverse the trend (hear him describe terms like Brain Drain and Affordable Living!).

For those of you who do want to relocate from wherever you are listening from we also talk about relocation strategies.

We’ll surprise you by not letting you know the topic of future shows just in case they don’t turn out as scheduled… that just means you’ll have to listen to find out what pearls of wisdom will be gushing forth from so, you wanna job…

… we planned to run our show on Relocating on 10/20… but Darlene was out on jury duty again. If you listened to our last show Darlene and I discussed her experience on jury duty for those of you who have never served (like myself – I got so close).

The Oct. 27th show focused on Online Networking. We talked to Adam Grohman, Director of Student Conduct and Community Education on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University about college campus’s reaction to what they consider MySpace and Facebook behavior unbecoming of a college student; and had our own repartee about forms of successful online networking and how to make it a tool for your job search. Next week: Your First Month on the Job… and at some point we will get back to talking about relocating… promise :)

Season 3 Up and Running!

Hope you all joined us for our first show of the season! We discussed the new generation of workers from the current generation of young adults born between 1977 and 1995 – the Millennial Generation – with Dave Meihofer of Enterprise Rent-A-Car and two students from C.W. Post. Dave Meihofer discussed how companies are changing their approach to recruiting and managing Millennial job candidates and our students talk to us about their experiences as “Millennials”.

As for our 9/13 show, sorry about the rerun (though a great rerun at that) Darlene was performing her civic duty waiting to be screened for jury duty. We will run our show about Relocating on 9/20.

Hi listeners! It’s been a while since this blog was updated. . . don’t ask why it is a L O N G story.

Ethics, Sales and Marketing...

… all not necessarily related unless they are on so, you wanna job...! The January 25th show was the One About Sales and Marketing during which we spoke to:

Tom Madera, Director of Recruiting, from NPD Group a market research firm about careers and the field of market research;

Liz Nachman, of Ace Marketing and Promotions, who spoke about careers in sales.

On February 1st we talked about business ethics and had as guests:

Dr. John Lutz, professor of ethics from the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and Director of the Long Island Center for Ethics, who gave us a primer on what ethics are;

Eric Fried, partner and human resources manager at the accounting firm of Janover and Rubenroit who spoke about business ethics on a practical level.

The One About International Jobs -- Part Deux

This episode about International Careers is a part 2 from last week. This episode features Susan Musich a global career consultant and certified Global Career Development Facilitator based in Washington, DC. She assists staff of The World Bank Group and their families with life and career transitions and relocations to and from more than 140 countries. She manages a website called CareerKiosk.org that supports her clients with links relevant to their job search.

Unfortunately a technology glitch prevented us from speaking to Sarah Genton, Local Employment Advisor at the American Embassy in Bolivia and Kelly Coyner who works as a management consultant and writer for U.S. and South American non-profit and academic organizations. We are VERY sorry for this and apologize to them since they took time out of their busy schedules to be with us to no avail.

The One About International Jobs: Part 1

We finally posted our last two shows to the archives:  The One at the Co-op Fair (mentioned in a previous entry) and The One About International Jobs.

The One About International Jobs is actually a Part 1 in our first consecutive 2-part broadcast!  We found so much information on International Jobs and so many great people that we had to have 2 shows!

In this Part 1 we spoke to Jody Tilbury of the Peace Corps who gave us an inside look at what the Peace Corps does and what YOU can do in the Peace Corps.  And we spoke to Christan Cassidy, Sr. Associate Director of Admissions, and Karyn Convey, Director of International Students both from the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.  They tell us about their jobs assisting International Students and issues that International Students face seeking employment in the US and about working as a college recruiter overseas.

The One at the Co-Op Fair

Live! From the Fishbowl in Hillwood Commons on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University it is the 4th bi-annual Cooperative Education Fair!  We broadcast this show remotely from in the midst of networking, resume collecting, and information gathering as students mingled to secure an internship for the Spring Semester.

Guests talked briefly about co-ops at their organization and included employers from:  The Actor’s Garage, CA (formerly Computer Associates), Sagamore Hill Historic Site, Pulte Homes, and of course the PEP Office.

The One About Careers In Psychology

We had a great show about careers in psychology! We spoke to Melissa Tierney, Director of Education at Grenville Baker Boys and Girls Club in Locust Valley, NY; and Dr. Laura Silver Maguire, Psy.D. in private practice and Assistant Director of the Psychological Services Center at C.W. Post. Melissa Tierney spoke to us about job opportunities in a social service/education setting while Dr. Maguire spoke to us about the differences between a Psy.D. and Ph.D., grad school in psychology, opportunities after graduation and opening a private practice.

It was really a great show. Hope you heard it. Problem is, the copy to be archived was “lost on the network” as said by the production engineer. If we ever find it we will post it to the archives. In the meantime, I have linked what I can above for your information.

What a great show this was! We spoke to:

Jeff Trugman a certified financial planner from the Goodman Financial Group of MetLife
Mike Harris the Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer for Virgin Records America
who each talked about their careers and career paths and what you need to do to be successful in the field of finance.

Darlene also proved that a mere giving of blood (and passing out) can’t hold her back from the show. Anyone catch our interview on The Mike Chimeri Show on October 26th.? We actually sounded intelligent and like career professionals who know a little something about resumes and the job search! The Trials and Tribulations of The One About Vague Job Titles

Wow. Quite a show today. Where to start… {INSERT FLASHBACK SOUND EFFECT AND WAVY LINES}

1 PM: Our first guest, Bob Fannin, Principal Consultant of Global Project Management LLC of Greenwich, CT, who was going to fill us in on the field of Project Management called and said that he had the flu. I briefly freaked until he said, with a hoarse voice and stuffed nose, that he would still do the interview via phone. (I hope that he is doing better now and wish him a speedy recovery). Breathing a sigh of relief, I thanked him and went on to other work.

1:25 PM: I get a call from a nurse working the annual blood drive at C.W. Post that Darlene Johnson, my co-host, fainted after her first ever, noble attempt at donating blood (this should in no way discourage anyone from donating blood). She was stretched out on a gurney in the student union pale as sheet and groggy. This may be dramatic but she looked up and said, “It looks like you are on your own…” Indeed…

1:55 PM: Our second guest for the 3rd segment of the show, Rita DiStefano, Human Resources Consultant for the firm of Portnoy, Messinger, Pearl and Associates, shows up early. This is a good thing.

2:00 PM: Everything seems great. I start the show: The One About Vague Job Titles. I make it through what I consider the hardest part of the show – the What’s Happening bit – when we report on the NYC and LI business events. The extraverted part of my extreme introverted-ness (yes, I am an introvert) kicks in and I manage to get through it filling the webwaves with my banter… I realized after the segment that I wasn’t breathing for 15 minutes.

2:17 PM or so: We come back from the break, I introduce Bob Fannin…. and there is no response… So I introduce him again… and there is no response. Technical failure on the Genter – the piece of equipment that gets phone calls on air. Joe, the engineer looks miffed and is playing around with cables and buttons and sliders and stuff to try to get the thing working. Bob was on the phone, I heard the poor guy wheezing but he couldn’t hear us and we couldn’t get him on the air. So, I turn to Rita DeStefano and begin our interview about the vagueness of Human Resources. We try a couple more times to get Bob on the air to no avail. The interview with Rita continues.

2:28ish PM: I talk to Bob on the phone during the break, explain the situation, let him know that we would try one more time in the 3rd segment to get him on. If that didn’t work we’d have to try again some other time. Again, wishes for a speedy recovery and huge thanks for his patience and willingness to be interviewed through his illness. I suddenly realize that I have no interview for the 3rd segment after we finish up with Rita.

2:30 PM: We…are… back… from the break. I give it one more try with Bob to no avail. I cut him loose, Joe apologizes one last time, and I finish the Human Resources interview with Rita. A slight panic ensues until I realize that her current job is also vague – she is a consultant! So we discuss the field of consulting with her for the rest of the segment. Thank you Rita for staying and loving the experience! Darlene calls during this segment and Joe relays the message that I “shouldn’t get too comfortable… So, You Wanna Job… isn’t a one man show… ” thanks Darlene…

2:45 PM: I finish out the show with no problems… except for the fact that I was talking too much and had to cut short the Worst Jobs in History bit. PHEW!!

All in all, I got a great interview from Rita DeStefano who obviously loves her job and, with enthusiasm, fleshes out the vaguenss of human resource and consulting. What a ride…

We should have the show archived by early next week...
